N.C. Cooperative Extension agents from the West District will conduct the Tier 1 N.C. MarketReady Fresh Produce Safety—Field to Family training workshop at the Mountain Horticulture Research and Extension Center located at 455 Research Dr. in Mills River, NC. The seven-hour training will be divided into three sessions on Mondays January 11, January 25 and February 8 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The fee for the training is only $15/person. Tailgate market vendors are encouraged to take part in the training.

N.C. MarketReady will host a free webinar series for N.C. Cooperative Extension agents to introduce the just-released N.C. MarketReady Fresh Produce Safety – Field to Family Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) Training Curriculum. The four-part webinar series will include information on the curriculum resources, a review of each Tier 1 module and an explanation of the participant tracking procedure.

Expo attendees may attend educational sessions, workshops and an industry trade show at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel. They will also have the opportunity to tour Vollmer Farm in Bunn, N.C., and several Raleigh sites including the N.C. State Micropropagation Unit, the NCDA&CS Agronomics Lab and the N.C. State Farmers Market.

The N.C. Fresh Produce Safety Task Force will host representatives from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2009, in Raleigh, for a Small Farm Produce Safety Listening Session. Several dozen small farm produce growers are expected to participate in this meeting to share concerns about produce safety regulations.

Join us online for a “virtual tour” of the Strawberry Growers Information Portal, a new Web site designed specifically for N.C. Strawberry growers and Extension agents. Online resources include business management tools, the latest production guidelines, links to weather and climate data and much more. Contributing faculty members will lead the virtual tour via a webinar.
North Carolina Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the N.C. Fresh Produce Safety Task Force, invites North Carolina growers and educators to an educational Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) 3rd-party audit. The educational audit will help participants better understand audits and allow growers to prepare for their own 3rd-party audit for GAPs certification.

Attendees of this free, open-to-the-public meeting can learn about seedless grapes being grown in Granville County, including the yields of different varieties of seedless grapes and how to grow them. A tasting will be offered at the twilight meeting as well. Hosted by the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service in Granville County and Doreathy Booth.

Children, start your imaginations! N.C. Cooperative Extension staff and N.C. State University host the first ever Zucchini 500 at the N.C. Research Campus Farmers Market. Children can create a race car from a zucchini – think pinewood derby – and compete for prizes in five categories. Bobby Waltrip, of the legendary Waltrip race family, will be on hand to call the races.
N.C. Cooperative Extension staff from Cabarrus and Rowan counties will present fun-to-learn educational opportunities at the 2009 N.C. Research Campus Farmers Market. The events take place at the Farmers Market on Thursday evenings from 4 to 7 p.m. on West Avenue in Kannapolis. Events are scheduled throughout the 2009 Farmers Market, with the season ending on October 29.
